A dictaphone that comes back from site as a finished report

The challenge

Nobody types in the field — they talk. Voice notes are faster than any form, but afterwards somebody has to transcribe them, assemble the report and place the photographs through the text by hand, trying to remember which picture belonged where. That burns more time than the inspection itself.

What we did

Rewritten from Backbone.js to Ionic

A new interface for both platforms from a single codebase.

A dictaphone with a timeline

Recording with a waveform, pause, scrubbing and markers — the inspector sees the structure of the dictation rather than a flat bar.

Photos inside the recording

A picture is taken from the same screen and pinned to that exact second of the dictation, along with its metadata.

The report assembles itself

The recording is uploaded, the speech is transcribed, and the photos take their places according to their position on the timeline.

Configurable for the customer’s process

Upload service, covering-letter template, photo quality, recognition language and extra report fields.

A hardened working mode

A separate sign-in, the screen kept awake while recording, and a forced purge of local data once the upload completes.

The result

The inspector comes back from site with a finished report where the text and the photographs are already in the right order, instead of an hour of transcription ahead of them.
