Collecting field data with no network: from native to hybrid

works with no connection
offline
iOS and Android, one codebase
2 platforms
managed by corporate IT
MDM

The challenge

Inspectors work where there is no network: a workshop, a construction site, an empty flat before handover. The old native version had aged along with its interface, and maintaining a separate codebase per platform was expensive. Meanwhile the security requirements had not gone anywhere — the device must stay under corporate management.

What we did

Rewritten from native to hybrid

A new interface for both platforms from a single codebase.

Fully offline

Forms, lookups, translations and answers live in a local database on the device. Filling a form does not depend on connectivity at all.

Synchronisation with progress

Data is pushed in separate queues, the user sees exactly what is uploading, and an interrupted session resumes from where it stopped.

Everything the field needs

Camera photos, a finger signature, QR scanning, geo-stamps, attachments and lookups.

An in-app dashboard

Reports sent, reports still open, and the trend by day, week and month.

Corporate device management

The app runs inside a mobile device management system, so corporate IT controls access centrally.

The result

Paper is gone from the field cycle: data reaches the system the same day, with photos, a signature and the coordinates of the spot where it was collected.
